Premier Redford is open to the idea of an investigation into Alberta’s aging pipeline framework. Recent spills have demonstrated just how critical it is to have continued maintenance on the just under 400 kilometres of pipeline that runs across the province. Pending an investigation by the Energy Resources Conservation Board, an inquiry could be plausible. Premier Redford said; "One of the things I will ask Ministers to do, both Minister Hughes and Minister McQueen, is whether or not we need to undertake something further. I'm not presupposing the outcome of these investigations, we will take advice from Ministers, I'm certainly not opposed to the idea but want to see what the recommendations are, and before we see the recommendations, with respect to those three incidents, I'm not going to jump to any conclusions," According to the Alberta Utilities Commission, the province responded just over 12,000 pipeline ruptures between 1990 and 2005.
