Monday night Wood Buffalo RCMP were called to a motor vehicle collision on Highway 881. Police attended the collision scene south of Anzac where a loaded logging truck had turned southbound onto the highway when it was rear-ended by a Pontiac Sunfire. As a result of the collision, the two occupants of the Pontiac were transported to the Northern Lights Regional Health Centre with undisclosed injuries. The passenger of the Pontiac, a 20 year-old male, later died in hospital. Preliminary reports indicate that alcohol does not appear to have been a factor, the investigation continues.
The city's Zero Waste Project is slated for start-up in August, it will transform 10 tones of municipal waste, daily, into a source of fuel and electricity. During the first phase of the project they’ll be converting a small amount of the garbage they receive into energy. The pilot project will combine a low temperature gasification facility and bio diesel plant, to capture heat and electricity. The project will eventually eliminate 80 hectares of Wood Buffalo landfills.
Valentine’s Day is just around the corner and there’s an engaging new project about falling in love in Fort McMurray. The Municipality has announced Turning Point. The project consists of six videos of couples telling their heart-warming experiences about living and falling in love in Fort McMurray and what their “turning point” was to make it home. One of the couples featured in the Turning Point videos are Sarah & Wayne Miller. Soul mates both originally from Newfoundland; they came to Fort McMurray separately, met here and fell in love.

A Saskatchewan First Nation has almost unanimously voted to accept a 21-million dollar settlement for land that was flooded in the 1940s. A deal was reached earlier this month after years of talks between the Sakimay First Nation, Ottawa and the province. The claim was over a water control structure built in the Qu'Appelle Valley that has left the land under water to this day
A T-D Bank economist says one way to cool the housing market is for Ottawa to limit the amount of loans CMHC is allowed to insure. With mortgage rates near record lows, Sonya Gulati says stricter mortgage eligibility rules are one way the government can act if it thinks too many people are borrowing more than they should. As of the end of September, Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation had insured 541-billion dollars in loans -- up from 501 billion in the previous year.

All seven Canadian NHL teams were in action last night. Devan Dubnyk made 31 saves to help Edmonton beat Colorado 3-2. The Calgary Flames lost 3-1 to Detroit. It's the Flames third straight loss at home after winning their previous eight.
In the NBA, After going three-and-two on the road, the Raptors were blown out on their home court, 100-77 by Atlanta.
Indianapolis Colts quarterback Peyton Manning says he has no plans to retire at this time as he continues to battle back from neck problems that kept him sidelined for the entire 2011 season. The four-time league MVP says he continues to make progress from three neck surgeries and that doctors are encouraged by his progress.
