As a part of the Cabinet ministers’ annual tour of Fort McMurray, Infrastructure Minister Jeff Johnson met with local seniors for tea at the Stonebridge Hotel yesterday, discussing some of their major concerns for the municipality. Johnson, along with Health and Wellness Minister Fred Horne and Seniors Minister George VanderBerg, will meet today at 2 p.m. with local seniors at the Golden Years Society to continue the location discussion.
The Municipality has announced the Firebag and Richardson bridge structures on the Fort Chipewyan Winter Road are closed. The municipality is advising residents to use the ice bridges at the Firebag and Richardson locations reminding those using the bridge that the speed limit is 5 km/h.
Just a week after rejecting TransCanada's Keystone X-L pipeline project to bring oil from Alberta to the Gulf Coast of Texas, U-S President Barack Obama is about to make an announcement about oil. Obama will announce today in Nevada the sale of oil and gas drilling leases for 154-thousand square kilometres in the Gulf Coast. TransCanada has said it will reapply to Washington for the Keystone permit, once it tweaks its proposed route to avoid an environmentally sensitive area of Nebraska.
Prime Minister Stephen Harper is using the world stage of the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland to push Canada as a great place to do business. He's meeting with global business leaders this morning and says his priorities include attracting more investment in Canada that will create jobs. Harper and other leaders have bemoaned the fact that many companies are sitting on their wallets, waiting for the investment climate to improve. Our P-M will address the entire forum of world government and business leaders later today.
The Canadian dollar has been close to parity with its American counterpart all night long. The loonie is currently trading overseas this morning at 99.91 cents U-S. That's about a quarter-cent higher than where the dollar closed yesterday in Toronto.
It's good to know Lego will survive in the stratosphere. Two Toronto high-school science buffs figured out how to launch a Lego man into space on a homemade spacecraft. And Matthew Ho and Asad Muhammad managed to capture the entire voyage on video and have posted it on YouTube. The flight of the Lego man holding a Canadian flag shows the world gradually dropping away below him. You then see the plastic guy floating in front of a glowing blue Earth before the helium balloon bursts and he begins his descent.

The Oil Barons outshot Sherwood Park 43-24 enroute to a 3-1 victory against the Crusaders. The two side behaved last night combining for just 14 min in penalties compared to the 171 last time they met.
There was a rare blowout in Montreal. The Canadiens gained some good momentum heading into the N-H-L all-star break with a 7-2 surprise win over league-leading Detroit. The Red Wings were riding a seven-game winning streak, but gave up four goals in the first period to the Habs. Montreal is eight points out of a playoff spot at 11th place in the Eastern Conference.
A big win in Utah for the Toronto Raptors; a 111-106 victory over the Jazz. It was Toronto's second straight win after previously dropping eight straight.
