A new development at Eagle Ridge moved closer to approval at council last night. The development is planned to feature more than three hundred residential units, plus a gas bar, convenience store, and other commercial space.To make it a mix of residential and commercial space, though, the architects will look for council to re-zone the land. A public hearing on the City Centre Area Redevelopment Plan has been postponed until next month.
Councillor Sheldon Germain, Macdonald Island C-O-O Tim Reid, and others has gone south of the border to get ideas on new sports facilities for Fort McMurray. The team are in Columbus, Ohio touring the Columbus Blue Jackets’ home rink and the Columbus Clippers’ baseball stadium. They’re looking for idea’s on Mac Island’s upcoming stadium as well as a potential downtown arena to attract a Western Hockey League team to the city. The representatives are heading to Kansas City next before returning to Fort McMurray on Thursday night.
Assembly of First Nations national chief Shawn Atleo says yesterday was an important day in advancing the call to renew the relationship between First Nations and Canada. He says First Nations are prepared to work with Ottawa on the basis of the new relationship to push beyond the Indian Act. At their summit in Ottawa, the federal government and First Nations agreed to set up task forces and working groups on issues like how the government funds bands and economic development. They've also pledged to report back in one year on the progress they've made overall.
The brother of a Calgary woman badly beaten at a Mexico resort says it appears Sheila Nabb has no brain damage. The 37-year-old emerged from a medically-induced coma yesterday, recognized her husband Andrew and is responsive and breathing on her own. Paul Giles says Andrew Nabb's father is describing him as a ``pillar'' -- which Giles says shows exactly how much he truly loves his wife.
U-S President Barack Obama says the defining issue in his country is keeping the American dream alive by giving everyone a fair shot. He's proposing that people earning one-million dollars or more should pay a minimum tax rate of 30 per cent. In his annual State of the Union address last night, Obama said he'll work with anyone in Congress, but will take on obstruction with action.
The company that owns the Costa Concordia is facing continuing outrage by passengers over the chaotic evacuation. It's now promising to refund the full cost of the cruise, reimburse travel expenses to and from the ship, all on-board expenses and any medical expenses incurred as a result of the grounding. A salvage company is preparing to remove fuel from the capsized liner, as divers continue to search for bodies. One found today brings the death toll to 16.

The Oilers have now lost 13 of their last 14 away games. The Canucks meanwhile moved within three points of idle Detroit for the Western Conference lead.
In other N-H-L action, the Toronto Maple Leafs eked out 4-3 overtime win over the New York Islanders. The New York Rangers shut out the Winnipeg Jets 3-nothing, while the Phoenix Coyotes held on to beat the Ottawa Senators 3-2. And in Calgary, the Flames fell 1-nothing to the San Jose Sharks.
